The holiday season can be a time of joy and connection, but it can also feel overwhelming, especially if you’re sensitive to noise, lights, or crowded spaces. Finding ways to create a sensory-friendly holiday experience can help you enjoy the season without feeling drained or overstimulated. Here are some practical tips to help you navigate the holidays with comfort and confidence.
Understand Your Sensory Needs
The first step in creating a sensory-friendly holiday experience is understanding what affects you the most. Are bright lights a problem? Do loud gatherings make you feel on edge? Knowing your triggers can help you plan ahead.
Take a moment to list the sights, sounds, smells, or textures that make you feel uncomfortable. For example, if loud music in a family gathering is overwhelming, you might want to bring noise-canceling headphones or ask for a quiet space to step away when needed.
Plan Your Holiday Environment
You have more control over your environment than you might think. If you’re hosting an event, consider decorating with softer lights, such as string lights, instead of bright overhead ones. Keep music at a lower volume, and opt for calming scents like lavender instead of strong holiday fragrances like pine or cinnamon.
If you’re attending someone else’s event, it’s okay to ask if accommodations can be made. Most hosts are happy to adjust the setting if it means everyone feels comfortable and included.
Communicate Your Needs
It can feel intimidating to share your sensory needs, but being open about what helps you can make a big difference. For example, if you need a break from a bustling dinner, let the host know ahead of time. You can say something like, “I might step out for a few minutes if it gets too loud.”
When others understand your needs, they’re more likely to be supportive. You might even find that others appreciate the sensory-friendly adjustments you suggest.
Create a Sensory Toolkit
A sensory toolkit is a personalized set of items that help you feel calm and grounded. This can include:
• Noise-canceling headphones
• A weighted blanket or lap pad
• Sunglasses for bright lighting
• Fidget toys or stress balls
• Essential oils or calming scents
Keep your toolkit nearby during holiday events. Whether you’re at home or out, having these tools on hand can make the experience more manageable.
Set Boundaries and Take Breaks
The holidays are often packed with events, but it’s important to pace yourself. Give yourself permission to say “no” to gatherings or activities that feel too overwhelming. Remember, it’s okay to leave an event early or skip one altogether.
Taking breaks is also key. Find a quiet spot where you can recharge if needed. A few minutes of deep breathing or stepping outside can help reset your senses and make it easier to return to the festivities.
Use Autism Therapy for Long-Term Support
If sensory sensitivities are a significant challenge for you, working with a therapist can be helpful. Autism therapy, for example, can provide tools and strategies to manage sensory overload and navigate social events with confidence. Through autism treatment in Katy, you can learn how to communicate your needs effectively, set boundaries, and develop coping techniques tailored to your unique sensory profile. The therapists at The Neurodiversity Center of Katy are here to help you explore these sensory sensitivities in a safe and supportive space.
Focus on What Brings You Joy
Finally, remember that the holidays are about joy and connection. Find the aspects of the season that you enjoy most and focus on those. Whether it’s watching a favorite holiday movie, baking cookies, or spending quiet time with loved ones, prioritizing what brings you happiness can make the season feel more manageable and fulfilling.

About The Author
I'm Quique (say it like "key+kay"), the co-founder and lead therapist at The Neurodiversity Center of Katy. Working with neurodivergent individuals is my passion. My clients often tell me that they find it easy to relate to me and appreciate my blend of expertise and down-to-earth advice.
For over two decades, I've dedicated my career to supporting neurodivergent individuals. My journey began in youth ministry, transitioned into teaching at a high school tailored for neurodiverse students, and ultimately led me to therapy.
My personal encounter with psychological challenges deeply informs my work. Diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome in my youth and later grappling with OCD as an adult, my therapeutic journey was transformative. It was through engaging with a skilled therapist that I learned to navigate my challenges productively. This experience was so impactful that it propelled me to support other men facing similar neurodiverse challenges.
I'm known for my vibrant personality and my knack for establishing genuine connections with neurodiverse clients. My therapeutic approach is engaging, focused on solutions, and tailored to meet the individual needs of each client.
Outside of my professional life, I'm a family man, blessed with a loving wife, four children, and two dogs—a pug and a French bulldog. My hobbies include writing, podcasting, exercising, watching TV, and spending quality time with friends.
Feel free to contact me. I would love to know how I can support you on your therapy journey.
