Summer break can be an exciting time full of possibilities. It’s a chance to relax, explore new hobbies, and even make new friends. But for neurodiverse teens — teens with autism, ADHD, or other brain differences — making new friends can sometimes feel overwhelming. The good news is that summer offers a fresh start and plenty of opportunities to build new connections.

Here are some simple tips to help neurodiverse teens in Katy, TX, meet new people and form lasting friendships.

Why Summer is a Great Time for Neurodiverse Teens to Make Friends

During the school year, life can get busy with homework, sports, and after-school activities. Summer gives you more free time and less pressure. It’s a great time to practice social skills and try new activities where you might meet others who share your interests.

In Katy, TX, there are lots of programs, camps, and community events that welcome neurodiverse teens. Whether it’s a summer art class, a gaming club, or a special needs sports league, there are many places where you can meet people who are open, kind, and looking for friends too.

The key is to start small. You don’t have to meet a big group all at once. Even finding just one or two people to connect with can make your summer more fun and meaningful.

Tips for Neurodiverse Teens to Build Friendships

1. Join Activities That Match Your Interests

Think about what you enjoy. Is it video games, painting, animals, sports, or building things? Look for summer programs or clubs in Katy that focus on your favorite hobbies. It’s easier to talk to people when you already have something in common!

2. Practice Small Conversations

You don’t have to plan a big speech. Even simple questions like “What’s your favorite game?” or “Have you been to this camp before?” can start a conversation. Smiling and making eye contact (if you feel comfortable) can also help you seem friendly and open.

3. Take Breaks When You Need To

Meeting new people can sometimes be tiring. It’s okay to step away for a few minutes to take a break and recharge. Listening to music, sitting in a quiet spot, or just breathing deeply can help you feel ready to jump back in when you’re ready.

4. Be Yourself

The best friendships are built on being real. You don’t have to pretend to be someone else to fit in. The right friends will appreciate you just the way you are.

5. Ask for Help if You Need It

If making friends feels really hard, you’re not alone. Many teens feel this way. Talking to a parent, therapist, or camp counselor can help. They might even introduce you to someone else who’s looking for a friend too.

I'm Quique (say it like "key+kay"), the co-founder and lead therapist at The Neurodiversity Center of Katy. Working with neurodivergent individuals is my passion. My clients often tell me that they find it easy to relate to me and appreciate my blend of expertise and down-to-earth advice.

For over two decades, I've dedicated my career to supporting neurodivergent individuals. My journey began in youth ministry, transitioned into teaching at a high school tailored for neurodiverse students, and ultimately led me to therapy.

My personal encounter with psychological challenges deeply informs my work. Diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome in my youth and later grappling with OCD as an adult, my therapeutic journey was transformative. It was through engaging with a skilled therapist that I learned to navigate my challenges productively. This experience was so impactful that it propelled me to support other men facing similar neurodiverse challenges.

I'm known for my vibrant personality and my knack for establishing genuine connections with neurodiverse clients. My therapeutic approach is engaging, focused on solutions, and tailored to meet the individual needs of each client.

Outside of my professional life, I'm a family man, blessed with a loving wife, four children, and two dogs—a pug and a French bulldog. My hobbies include writing, podcasting, exercising, watching TV, and spending quality time with friends.

Feel free to contact me. I would love to know how I can support you on your therapy journey.
