How to Reset Your Teen's Sleep Schedule Before School Starts: Tips from a Therapist

Summer often means later bedtimes, sleeping in, and less structure. While that can be a welcome break, it can also make the first weeks of school much harder. Helping your teen gradually adjust their sleep schedule before school starts can improve their mood, focus, and energy.
Here are a few therapist-approved strategies that can help.
Why Teen Sleep Matters Before the School Year
Most teens need 8–10 hours of sleep each night, but many don't get enough once school begins. A sudden switch from staying up until midnight to waking up at 6:00 a.m. can leave teens feeling tired, irritable, and overwhelmed.
Starting the adjustment one to two weeks before school gives your teen's body time to adapt.
Teen Sleep Tips That Actually Work
Instead of changing everything overnight, try making small adjustments each day.
Move bedtime and wake-up time earlier by 15–30 minutes every few days.
Encourage your teen to get sunlight soon after waking up. Morning light helps reset the body's internal clock.
Limit phones, tablets, and video games for at least an hour before bed.
Keep a consistent bedtime routine, even on weekends.
Avoid caffeine later in the afternoon and evening.
Make the bedroom cool, dark, and quiet to encourage better sleep.
The goal isn't perfection. It's consistency.

When Your Teen Still Struggles
Sometimes sleep problems are connected to more than just summer habits. Anxiety, ADHD, depression, autism, or stress about returning to school can all make it difficult for a teen to fall asleep or stay asleep.
If your teen seems worried about school, struggles to get motivated, or has ongoing sleep difficulties, talking with a therapist can help uncover what's really going on.
At the Neurodiversity Center of Katy, we work with teens to build healthy routines, manage anxiety, strengthen emotional regulation, and develop practical skills that support success both in and out of the classroom.

About Teen Therapist Quique:

I'm Quique (say it like "key+kay"), the co-founder and lead therapist at The Neurodiversity Center of Katy. Working with neurodivergent individuals is my passion. My clients often tell me that they find it easy to relate to me and appreciate my blend of expertise and down-to-earth advice.
For over two decades, I've dedicated my career to supporting neurodivergent individuals. My journey began in youth ministry, transitioned into teaching at a high school tailored for neurodiverse students, and ultimately led me to therapy.
My personal encounter with psychological challenges deeply informs my work. Diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome in my youth and later grappling with OCD as an adult, my therapeutic journey was transformative. It was through engaging with a skilled therapist that I learned to navigate my challenges productively. This experience was so impactful that it propelled me to support other men facing similar neurodiverse challenges.
I'm known for my vibrant personality and my knack for establishing genuine connections with neurodiverse clients. My therapeutic approach is engaging, focused on solutions, and tailored to meet the individual needs of each client.
Outside of my professional life, I'm a family man, blessed with a loving wife, four children, and three dogs—a pug and two miniature schnauzers. My hobbies include writing, podcasting, exercising, watching TV, and spending quality time with friends.Learn how teen counseling helps teens manage summer anxiety, build healthy routines, and adjust to changes with support from Neurodiversity Center of Katy.
